The inability to be away for two consecutive weeks is the cleanest available measure of how much of the business runs through you.
Because one week is survivable by deferral.
Most owner-led companies can absorb a five-day absence by pushing decisions until you return. Nothing visibly breaks. The queue just gets longer, and you pay for the vacation in the two weeks afterward.
Two weeks is different. The deferral strategy runs out. Decisions that cannot wait get made without the usual routing, or they do not get made at all, and both outcomes are informative.
How much of the business depends on your judgment in real time.
If direction blurs while you are gone, strategy is not transferred. It lives in your head and the team is approximating it. If priorities drift, the structure does not hold them. If quality slips, the standard is you rather than a system.
None of that shows up on a P&L. It shows up in the first week back, in the volume of things waiting.
No. Vacation is just the cheapest available test.
The same dependency that makes two weeks difficult is what caps how fast the company can grow, because every increment of growth adds load to the same person. It is also what makes the business difficult to sell, because a buyer is purchasing a system and you are the system.
Owners tend to experience it personally, as exhaustion or guilt. It is more useful to read it structurally, as a design stage the company has not moved through yet.
For a two-week absence to be uneventful, three things have to hold without you.
Direction has to be clear enough that the team can apply it to a situation you did not anticipate. Ownership has to sit with named people who have the authority to act on it. And the standard has to be visible enough that someone can meet it without your reaction as the reference point.
If those three hold, the vacation is uneventful. If they do not, no amount of pre-trip preparation will make it so, because you are preparing for the symptom.
The purpose is diagnosis, not performance. We will tell you what we see, including when what you need is not us. If there is a fit, we say so directly. If there is not, we say that too.
